Behind the Scenes
Rupert’s favourite Scene to film: The Yule Ball (as the band seemed to be giving a private concert)
As Julie Waters does not appear in this film, the Weasley kids send her a postcard from the set “We miss you, Dad can’t control us”
Rupert got teased by the Phelps twins for having to waltz with Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall)
Rupert did not cut his hair after finishing Prisoner of Azkaban because he was busy with his GCSEs. When he returned to the HP set, they asked him to leave the hair long for Goblet of Fire.
Rupert described the scenes at the Quidditch World Cup as very difficult since all the actors had to get most of the scenes right on the first take due to the explosions and fireworks, as those could not be repeated. Additionally, most of scenes were shot at night, and the ground on the set was slippery so that many of the actors fell down during takes.
Rupert did not enjoy having a cast made for the underwater sequence as it felt awful and seemed like it took forever to dry.
Rupert and his co-stars had diving lessons for the scenes in the lake. Professional divers were always present, and the actors were only allowed underwater for a few seconds at a time.
Before filming began, Mike Newell organized a “workshop” for the young cast for several weeks, during which they did improvisations. Rupert often paired up with Robert Pattinson.
The inscriptions on the Riddle’s family tombstone had to be digitally changed at the last minute after fans of the books, having seen promotion stills released from the graveyard scene, pointed out that none of the Riddle names on the tombstone referred to Voldemort (a.k.a. Tom Marvolo Riddle), as the filmmakers erroneously thought, but to his dad, Tom Riddle (Sr.), his grandfather, Thomas Riddle, and his grandmother, Mary Riddle, all three of whom were killed by Tom Marvolo Riddle in 1943.
The newspaper headline “Harry Potter and the Triwizard Tournament” was considered as the title of the fourth book
The tune you hear the teens sing to the school song, “Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts” was written by Mike Newell. The lyrics first appeared in the first novel, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”. (Traditionally the song can be sung to any tune the singer happens to like.)
The voice heard on Frank Bryce’s radio in the beginning of the film is that of director ‘Mike Newell’.
